Mediation

Many people are using alternative dispute resolution (ADR) instead of traditional litigation to resolve family law cases. During these processes, the divorcing couple and their individual lawyers meet and work together to reach a settlement. When successful, mediation and other methods of ADR are less stressful and typically less expensive than divorce litigation.

Attorney Lynn A. Cohen is a trained Illinois divorce mediator and an experienced lawyer. She can act as a mediator for couples. She can also represent individuals in mediation, but she cannot be an individual's attorney and the mediator in the same case. Reach An Agreement By Talking Through The Issues

Divorce and family law litigation that goes to trial can increase conflict between the parties, further damaging strained relationships. In mediation, however, families can resolve disputes in a less formal setting that is also more private than a courtroom.

In a mediation session, the parties and their attorneys discuss the issues with the supervision of a mediator, who is a neutral party. The mediator's job is to assist the parties by facilitating discussion and negotiation. The mediator does not have the authority to make decisions.

When people reach an agreement using mediation, they are able to take control of their future rather than letting a judge make decisions about their case. This is generally better for all parties because the judge will not be familiar with the specifics of the case.
